Understanding What A Spiritual Awakening Is

By Catalina Nielsen

Defining a spiritual awakening is not a cut and dry situation. Every day people from all around the world and from all walks of life encounter moments in their life where their faith is tested or where they acquire faith for the first time. When this happens most people express that they have had an experience that has changed or challenged them in some way.

Consider how different each and every person in the world is. Consider how different you are from your friends and family. When considering these differences look at the fact that there is most likely not a single person in your life that thinks exactly the way you do, or believes exactly the way you do. That is why spirituality is such a personal experience. Each person will experience it on their own terms according to their own belief system and experience.

Many people grow frustrated when they share their stories and ideas when it comes to their personal spiritual experiences. This is mainly due to the fact that because of the differences in all people no one can truly understand what it is you have personally endured. They may have a general idea or understanding but they will never feel the same as you or have the same unique experience that you had. This is one of the main reasons that many people argue about spirituality.

Most people have been raised around some type of religion. They may have grown up in church or may have been exposed to different belief systems. However, until a person truly has a spiritual awakening the things they heard and the beliefs they were exposed to were probably nothing but words without true meaning and understanding.

A spiritual awakening is where the things they have heard and the things they have been taught begin to have personal meaning. No longer do they see things as mere ideas or fantasy, but they for once in their life begin to experience something when it comes to their faith and ideals. When this happens a person's entire life can completely change dramatically.

Though there are many positive aspects involved in these types of awakenings there are also negative ones. Many people that have a spiritual awakening will use it in the wrong way. They attempt to force personal beliefs on others or will begin to do unmoral things in the name of their beliefs. These types of people have a very negative effect on those around them. They often times lose friends, family, and do things that are ill-advised. When this happens they can scare people away from learning more about their experience or from even wanting to have anything to do with it at all.

Regardless of what anyone believes the idea and notion of a spiritual awakening cannot be denied. There are true testaments to people's lives being completely changed for the better when such things happen to them personally.

There are many things in life that are a mystery and spirituality will always be one of them. Though you may not understand it there is no harm in allowing others to experience a spiritual awakening when positive changes are taking place.
