The Benefits Of Become A Nurse Author

By Marsha Klein

There are several types of nurse author and all are in significant demand currently. There are those that write fictional stories in novel format often with a health sector theme and also screenwriters who write television shows and movies set in hospitals which are very popular among audiences. However, the majority write nonfiction works offering advice and knowledge on health care issues.

Nurses who have a belief that they can let others benefit from the experience and insight should not be afraid of taking to writing. There are some who feel that their only calling is to care for the sick and needy and that lofty ideas such as writing should be left to the professionals. However, this is a faulty worldview that needs to be addressed.

Firstly, in order to qualify in the profession, nurses have to do a lot of writing in the form of essays and dissertations. This fact alone provides good preparation for writing any publishable works. In doing these academic writings you have to research and plan and lay down ideas coherently. These are all directly applicable even to the work of fiction. Therefore, you are already a trained writer to an extent.

Secondly, caring for people takes on many forms. Primary care that most nurses are involved in is of crucial importance and a service that the whole of mankind depends on. However, you can also care for people by providing them information. Many people research issues about their health and look to qualified writers to provide that information. Also, you would not be a qualified practitioner if you had not read the works of others in your training. You may also want to contribute to the training of other nurses.

Ordinary people are always seeking information on certain key topics related to health. Some of these topics include conception and pregnancy through to childbirth and the care of babies and infants. As people are living longer, there is also more interest in staying healthy in old age and caring for elderly people.

In fact ever increasing amounts of people are regaining control of their own health concerns and delegating less and less to power to doctors in clinics and hospitals. Alternative medicine and natural health care are all subjects of great interest to the reading public and these are also areas that healthcare professionals are trusted to provide their expertise and insight.

The internet provides enormous scope for nursing professionals who want to enter into writing. Blogging is one such avenue that is worthy of exploration. Blogging is very good at reaching target audiences with the information you have to offer and it does not just have to be a labor of love. It can also be a very lucrative enterprise if done correctly.

No one is saying that getting published by the major publishing houses is an easy feat as a first time nurse author. You will have to be persistent if this is your aim. You can also consider self publishing. This offers more autonomy since you do not have to satisfy the dictates of a publishing house as to what is marketable and what is not. However, you must be prepared to handle your own publicity and marketing if book sales is a factor that is of concern to you.
