The world's worst bus accidents

By Francesca F. Cooke

round the world a number of horrific bus accidents have taken place over the years. With buses being the main method of transport for school children in America, many of these accidents unfortunately involve school buses. While most accidents which happen are crashes, there have been others which nobody could have expected. One of which was when in 1976 a bus carrying a school choir plunged off a Cliffside killing 28 passengers.

In 2005 in America another bus accident occurred which killed 24 elderly people from a residential home. The accident happened after the residential home was evacuated to avoid hurricane Rita. The bus was in traffic on an American highway when a mechanical fault caused a fire which then ignited oxygen tanks on the bus. There were 44 passengers on the bus when it happened but only 20 managed to escape before the bus exploded.

A large number of bus accidents have happened in the Philippines recently as a result of vehicles which aren't maintained well. In 2010 40 people were killed and others injured when a bus drove off the edge of the cliff and tumbled for 30 metres before coming to rest. As the bus fell, many of the passengers were thrown from the bus while others were thrown around inside the bus. It is believed the accident was down to a brake failure.

Early in 2010 one bus accident which was very much in the media was that of the Togo national football team. While on their way to the Africa cup of nations in Angola, the bus was attacked by men with machine guns in an act of terrorism. The players were stuck on the bus for a long time before the attackers fled. The driver of the bus was killed while many others including some players were injured.

In 2011 11 people were killed in Egypt when a bus carrying tourists from their hotel to the airport at the end of their holiday crashed. The driver lost control of the bus part way through the journey and the bus overturned throwing passengers around inside.
