Travel Tips: Avoiding Bed Bugs

By Adam Donne

When you first think about going travelling, avoiding bed bugs infestations is not going to be what you think about initially. Nor should it be of course, the first thing you should discuss is all of the positive aspects, that is, whatever the reason is that you want to go on the trip. However at some point you should make preparations for avoiding things going wrong, for example picking up an infestation of bedbugs.

How Bed Bugs Spread

To understand the best way of making sure that you do not get bed bugs, first you will have to know how it is that you can get them. That is, how they actually spread in the first place. One of the most important things to consider is that they do not need a place to be dirty, it can be perfectly clean and still be infested with these little creatures.

There are two main reasons why it doesn't matter what conditions are like in a room for an infestation to be present. The most important one is that they don't need anything else from the rest of the environment, except for a little shelter maybe, which every house naturally has. They get everything they need from our blood. The other reason is that they can't travel large distances on their own anyway.

The places that you are most at risk of picking up a bed bug infestation is in places like hotels and hostels. The reason is that if someone brings an infestation with them, they will leave a few of the little critters behind, and the next person who sleeps in the bed will pick them up. And this can go on and on very rapidly.

When you go travelling then, that is when you are most at risk of picking up an infestation. That's simply because they get passed on by people, and through proximity, so places where lots of different people stay is where they are going to be the biggest problem.

Avoiding Bed Bug Infestations

If you are going to avoid a bed bug infestation then you are going to have to make sure that you don't sleep in any room where one is present. That is not as easy as it sounds of course because they are very difficult to spot. Not only are they very small, they are also excellent hiders. So it's easy to miss them.

To have a chance of finding them you are going to know the best places to look. One of those places is around the seams of the mattress, which they like because it is close to where they are going to attack and also it provides them a bit of protection. You might actually see a bed bug there, or if not they might have left evidence of their waste there, which will be little black marks.

On the whole though, bedbugs do not like to hide on the bed directly because that means there is a better chance that they will be found. Which is why for a smaller infestation, they're usually found close to, rather than on, the bed. So if you don't see any sign of them on the mattress you should also check bedside furniture, as that also provides a good place to hide.

Once you have looked in those places, if no evidence of an infestation has made itself evident, then the likelihood is that there isn't actually an infestation there to find. However, if you have missed it, which is very possible as they are so good at hiding, then you'll have to get rid of the infestation you've picked up.

How to Get Rid of an Infestation

When you are unlucky enough to pick up an infestation, the best thing that can happen is that you will notice that before you get home. That way you can avoid having to deal with it there. While you are on your travels, all you'll have to do to get rid of an infestation is make sure that you clean everything that you have very thoroughly. That should kill them all.

However if you are unsuccessful in that, or if you fail to notice the infestation before you get home, then you will bring it back with you. In that case the best thing to do is call in pest control experts to get rid of them all.
