Come Visit Hamilton Tasmania

By Anton Maverick

Hamilton in Tasmania is approximately seventy four kilometres north west of Hobart. One of the truly good things about holidaying in Tasmania, is that everything is so close, so with Campervan Hire Australia, it's actually possible to visit lots of engaging places. Hamilton sits by the Clyde Stream and enjoys fine mountain perspectives. It was originally settled by Scottish farmers and there are some old farmhouses still there to see.

While the area started out as a farming area, it slowly turned into a transport heart. Alcohol flowed readily in colonial times and the Scottish settlers failed to take long to start practising their age old trade of distilling spirits. There were a number of breweries doing a roaring trade in the 1830's and the town developed a name of being 'lively'.

There are a few historic buildings to take a look at across the area and the Hamilton Heritage Centre has a lot of information regarding the early town. The Old School House which was built by convicts in the latter 1850's is very beautiful and worth exploring. It is currently a B & B if you wanted to stay. You can also drive thru the Hamilton countryside and visit Meadowbank Lake, which is close by, for a swim.

One of the high spots of visiting Hamilton is a visit to Prospect Villa and Garden. The villa is Georgian in design and constructed from the pale golden sandstone that was generally utilized for house building in colonial times. The old home is fantastically complimented by it's striking gardens. They feature breathtaking views of the area as are characterized by a traditional, classic design featuring long vistas and focal points.

Hamilton and it's surrounds are charming and the area is another good example of Australian colonial heritage with it's allocated share of stimulating tales. The Scottish settlers left their mark, even down to the name of the river Clyde. Recently the city has antiques and craft shops, however the surrounding sheep farms provide the atmosphere of the past.
