Options For Midway Airport Transportation

By Rena Hudson

As one of the most populous cities in the United States and a major tourist destination for both domestic and international travelers, Chicago sees a great number of people coming and going all the time. From tourists and business travelers coming in to locals heading off to other destinations, the city's two international airports are both teeming with activity every day. O'Hare, is generally more well-known than Midway but the latter is also a very busy port that hosts a great number of people daily. Whether coming in or going out through Midway, one will need to know about their choices for Midway Airport transportation.

If arriving at the airport by car, one will have to make their way to the south side of the city. From downtown, you can take Interstate 55 South and get off at the Cicero Avenue South exit. Continue to follow Cicero until you reach the airport. From the Northern suburbs, take Interstate 294 South to I-55 Northbound and exit at Cicero Avenue South as described above. If coming from the west, you can use Interstate 88 to get to I-294 then follow the directions from the North. From the south, I-294 will take you to I-55 from where you also exit at Cicero.

There are lots for short-term and for long-term parking surrounding the airport. Departing and arriving passengers may be dropped off and picked up at the terminal but waiting curbside is not permitted. When waiting for an incoming passenger it is advised to use the cell phone lot that is located just minutes away from the terminals.

If you don't want to or cannot drive, there are several other options. The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), know by locals as The El, is an economic and convenient means of getting to and from the airport from the city proper. The Orange Line of the CTA goes between downtown Chicago and Midway with trains running every day of the week from four o'clock in the morning until 1 am.

A more convenient but more expensive alternative is to take a taxi. Taxis can be found virtually anywhere in the city at any time and are readily available at Midway itself.

There are a number of shuttle services that operate from Midway. These serve a variety of locations in the area and it would be good to inquire to see which one or ones go to your destination. If you're staying at a hotel in the metropolitan area, your hotel may have a shuttle service available as well.

If coming from or going to somewhere outside of the Chicago area, a regional bus may be a good option. Theses types of buses are available to parts of Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa as well as parts of downstate Illinois.

At times it may be necessary to transfer between Midway and O'Hare and for doing so there are three main choices. One can take a shuttle or taxi, for which at least an hour should be allowed, or the CTA which can take up to two hours.

There's a good number of alternatives available for Midway Airport transportation. Travelers going through here should have no problem finding a way to get to and from there that will fit their needs and budget.
