Visiting The Suwannee River Campground

By Margaret Wagner

People go camping to enjoy a peaceful environment away from the busy towns. For you to enjoy your stay, you have to get to a suitable site. It should be away from parking lots and roads. This eliminates the possibility of vehicles settling in the sites. This is great. You will enjoy the Wilderness Setting of Suwannee River Campground. This experience is awesome.

It is actually safe for the campers to stay away from any parking lots. This assures you of safety from the criminals. Many crimes are committed within ten minutes walk from the parking site. Keep off the busy trails. Actually you should try to settle at 100 feet from the sites. Otherwise, you will be constantly disturbed by animals and hikers who prefer these places.

It is good to settle in an elevated ground in Chiefland, FL. There should be free drainage. You will be safer from floods in times of heavy rains. If you have camped in a mountainous area, you will be more comfortable. There will be fewer disturbances from mosquitoes, ticks and other insects. The problem with the highly elevated sites is lack of water. The lower land is colder during the cooler months. Cold air tends to collect in these sites.

Do not make settlement in strong wind sites. Your tent should not be located in areas that are in direct contact with strong winds. You will be more comfortable with a low breeze. These places also have fewer insects. They remain dry for longer. Slow winds do not put off your fire. Since most winds come from west, you should settle in the eastern direction.

Avoid settling near falling rocks and large boulders. Keep of the dry river gullies. Sudden storm will sweep your properties away. You should also not shelter below dying or dead trees. If there is occurrence of strong winds, branches could break. They may destroy your tent. Find a level ground with a suitable drainage. The area ought to be large enough to support the tent. If that ground is sloppy, make arrangements so you can sleep while your head is elevated.

Take your time as you seek temporary settlement. The area that you settle in should have slow moving water sources. The spring waters are actually cleaner and quieter. You should avoid drinking river water even if it is treated. These areas may be suitable to stay but you should be aware of more insect settlement. They prefer to breed in places of slow moving waters.

Once you have selected a suitable site, remove the hiking shoes. Boots are usually heavy. They may create some depressions in the site. Consider wearing light camping shoes. Actually it is easier to move around with them. Avoid disturbing the rare plants you come across. These plants take long to grow. Recovery may take place after several years.

The camp fires are quite dangerous to the campers and wild life. This is the reason why there is prohibition of fires in most of the sites. Make use of dead woods as you set it up. There are fire rings where you can set the fire. Do not use live branches. They are poor at making fire. If there is no ring, build yours using stones.
