Travelers the world over and tourists that love the Northern Hemisphere have already gotten to know about a British Columbian secret. This secret comes in the form of an archipelago, called Haida Gwaii, which is fast becoming popular with tourists. Before you book your Haida Gwaii accommodations however, it is best to know a little more about the various activities that can be had on the specific island chain.

One of the prime reasons why this archipelago is becoming a tourist attraction is it is one of the best, if not the best place to go whale watching the whole year round. Many enthusiasts, curious tourists, scientists and students come here throughout the year to view several whale species which include the humpback whale, the gray whale and the killer whale. Depending on the season, one can more or less can have frequent sightings per hour. It is thus best to do a little more research when wanting to see the most of the whales at any one time.

It would be expected that a majority of activities will involve water, but you can have a lot of land based activities as well to make your visit worthwhile. Quite a few tourists do take advantage of the many camping grounds an hiking trails scattered about. Many choose to hike and bike in the early morning and then just spend the rest of the day lounging about on the beach until sunset.

If you are like others who want to learn more about the culture that the local Haida has to offer, you will not be disappointed. The locals are very friendly and accommodating in a lot of respects. It will however, be advisable to do a bit of research first so you can avoid embarrassing moments and situations when dealing with or talking to them.

When studying the local culture you may come across areas with plenty of totem poles. You would also likely notice that these totems are remarkably similar to Alaskan ones. This is because the Haida also vast tracts of Alaska. These totems serve as records of families in the area and serve as a part of local history.

If you really want to explore all the islands and immerse yourself in its culture, then prepare to spend at least four days in total. These four days will afford you time to visit each of the communities on the island and all the museums. Also you will have ample time to visit some local crafts shops which deal with the bent wood furniture techniques, which is well known amongst North American tribes.

There is not much trouble in getting to this archipelago. All one has to do is to go to Toronto and book one of the flights that leave regularly. The flight all in all takes approximately two hours for a one way trip. Others also take the ferry or charter a boat to get to the islands, which can make for a more scenic and adventurous route.
