The Secret Manipulator Hidden In Television Show

By Daphne Bowen

There has always been a theory on the mass media being able to manipulate people particularly television shows that people watch everyday. Now in every TV show that is out there, there is actually said to be a secret manipulator hidden in television show that would actually garner a lot of views so that a particular show will stay on the air. This would include all kinds of shows like reality shows, series, and other kinds of things that one can watch on TV.

Now Herbert Kugman has stated that more often than not, a person who watches TV will be using his right brain and not much of his left brain. Now just a recap of the brain hemispheres, the left hemisphere houses the logical reasoning functions while the right brain houses the emotional response functions. So when a person would be using his right brain, then obviously he will be creating a number of emotional reactions.

This stems out from the fact that people who watch TV shows are more inclined to want to relax and not analyze too much about what they are watching. This then forces the brain to shift from the left hemisphere to the right hemisphere in a split second as the brain is more relaxed during this shift. It is because of this that people are actually drawn to watching certain shows because these shows can evoke emotional responses that appeal to the viewers.

Now in relation to this, there is one technique known as market segmentation that the media uses in order to target people. Notice that there are so many different genres of shows and so many different kinds at different times of the day. This is simply because the director would want to target only a certain group of people based on similar demographics and psychographics.

Now usually, the main goal of the directors is to make a show as addictive as possible and to get as many viewers as possible. So the question to ask here is that why are some shows really addictive. Now this would usually stem out from the story plot because people would usually follow a series if the plot or the story line is really good.

Of course the one who would come up with the story plot would be the scriptwriters which means they are the core manipulators. They are the ones who are also the ones responsible for writing the dialogues between the characters which is another factor that would appeal to the viewers. Now they can add any type of subliminal message on the script that the director will bring to life for the viewers to ingest.

Of course the same kind of theory would also be the same for reality television as well. Of course the concept of reality shows would appeal to people because it gives the people a feeling that they can become TV stars overnight. This is something that really appeals to viewers.

So to sum it all up, it can be said that television actually captures the inner desires of the viewers. Bringing them to another world is the goal of the director as it will make them want to become immersed in the shoes of each character. This is one of the core principles of manipulation.
