The Colca River flows through the valley which began high up in the Andes Mountains. This wonderful canyon is the home of some unusual animal species such as the Andean Condor which is an endangered bird. This is a very popular attraction because of the sheer magnificence of the animal.

The pre-Inca Uros people are the best known people that build these artificial islands. They were originally built to keep the inhabitants safe from attacks from the Incas and the Collas. Some of these islands were built to grow agriculture and they are called floating gardens.

One can go and see the sacred valley which was named for the river that once flowed through the area. This valley is known to be the heart land of the Inca race. There are archeological sites all along the banks of the river which show signs of the locals' lives and really allow a closer look at their former homesteads.

If one goes to visit this place, one can see the trademark architecture of pyramid like structures that was prevalent in that day. It is a unique and breathtaking site which completely boggles the mind. It is amazing to imagine how the people in those days built these huge structures and what kind of lives they lead.

Many of these places are natural heritage sites that are protected by the Peruvian government. They are open to the public so that the people can get a sense of the history and the beauty of these places.
