Christmas in the Canaries

By Catherine McCulloch

Although Christmas abroad might not be the most traditional, over the last few years, many have opted to celebrate the festive season with a spot of winter sun and due to being dubbed "The Land of Eternal Spring" because of its dream climate, the Canary Islands are a popular choice. With loads of great deals to be found through mytravel.com, this year you too could be celebrating yuletide in warmer climates.

So what should you expect from Christmas in the Canaries? Well, just because its warm doesn't mean that you shouldn't expect similar scenes. Expect buzzing town squares decked out in dazzling festive lights, nativity scenes and excitable local children preparing to open their gifts.

While in Britain, shops tend to shut on Christmas time, you'll find the Canaries establishments are wide open with plenty available during the holiday seasons. So whether its water sports, shopping or day excursions that you fancy, you'll be able to spend your December 25 in the sun.

Another appealing aspect of celebrating Christmas in Spain is joining in in their cultural traditions. With plenty of carnivals and firework displays on hand, you'll also want to check out the Three King processsions, indicative of the Spanish culture. Similarly, if you are there for New Years Eve, you should partake in the tradition of eating a grape for every chime of the clock up until midnight - followed by copious amounts of cava of course!

Perhaps it's a stint in the sun, time spent with the family or just a getaway from the manic Christmas affairs in Britain, one things for sure, the Canary Islands are a perfect temperature in the winter, so you can enjoy outdoor activities while not having to worry about it being too cold either. Another great thing about the Canaries are the friendly locals -- who are always willing to lend a hand.
