By Melissa Brooks

When you go out into the wilderness you don't know what to expect. You may have no problem at all other than keeping dry and warm or you may need to send distress signals for a rescue. Unless you are really confident you should not attempt wilderness hiking, and when you do you must be well equipped with outdoor survival kits. In this article we will look at some of the essentials to pack into your kit as well as expressing the necessity for safety at all times.

So, before you head out there to the wilderness you must check and double check that you have everything with you that you may need. It is important that your backpack is not too heavy, but that it contains everything you may need. For a guide you can Google a checklist for hiking or camping. The things you need will depend on the season and the time you will be away. Some things that you will need always and every time are energy snacks and water, a knife, rope, and a basic first aid kit.

Carrying a water bottle with you is perhaps the most essential of all survival skills in the wilderness. With just water you can remain hydrated for not one night but for many consecutive nights should the need arise.

But, you don't just need to know what to put into your emergency kit. You also have to know how to use the items you pack such as your knife and rope. If you have a tarpaulin knife and rope with you a shelter can be built and you can also secure yourself when walking. So, learn to tie some basic knots and learn how to use your multipurpose knife.

If you are left out overnight in the wilderness, having gauged it too dangerous to try and return to camp, you may well find yourself left with no tent and with little to keep you warm other than your clothes and body heat. A campfire is a great way to keep warm when out on the wild, and once again to start a fire you will need that all purpose knife you have packed.

If the weather is bad and it is windy or cold, trying to start a fire can be a challenge. This is where the tarpaulin you packed comes in handy, keeping you protected from the cold and rain and allowing you to make a fire that will stay lit.

Part of the thrill of wilderness camping and hiking is the feeling you are going out into the unknown. However, a wilderness trip can often turn into a nightmare when you do not have the essential kit you need with you.

It may seem like child's play, but a great way to really get prepared for your journey into the wild is to practice at home. The great outdoors is a big and open playground but it is one that is full of danger. So make sure you read up on skills as well as practising tying knots and starting a fire in the safety of your yard.
