Africa is a continent that is known to be home to diverse cultures and traditions. The north is Muslim dominated while the south has a significant Christian population. For many centuries, this diversity has seen many historic sites and rites preserved. One unique part of the continent is East Africa. Despite the tide of changes brought by civilization and modernity, Ethiopia still has a glistening past that it holds on to. Its history dates as far as the bible. Historians often refer to it as the cradle of humankind. Human fossils that go back millions of years continue to be discovered in its lands.

The resting place of Emperor Haile Selassie can be found in the Trinity Cathedral. The Emperor holds legendary status in Rastafarian and Ethiopian culture. A large chunk of his fame came from his dedication to repelling invasion by the Italians during the scramble and partitioning of Africa by European powers. There are a plethora of city streets named in his honor in Africa.

Bahar Dar is a popular spot for many tourists. This is because of the many wonders within it. The source of the Blue Nile, Lake Tana, can be found in its vicinity. Furthermore, it is home to many ancient monasteries. If you are keen on the history of religion, this is one area you might want to include in your itinerary.

Another location of significance is Gondar. Once you get to the area, you may pay a visit to the ancient ruins of Kuskuam. The buildings, now in ruins, were built for the Ethiopian Empress Mentewab in the 1700s. The Royal Enclosure within the area was designated a world heritage site by UNESCO. It contains a total of five castles built by Ethiopian kings in succession during the 1700s.

The highlight of your trip should be Axum. As the ancient capital of the Axumite Empire, it holds great historical importance. These days, it stays protected thanks to UNESCO regulations. The 2000 year old Stelae fields can also be found close by.

To finalize your visit, travel to Lalibela. Mount Asheton monastery calls the area home. The monastery is a rock hewn enclosure built in the 1200s. At the end of your exploration, you may fly back to the capital right from Lalibela.
