Eyes Of A Valley Girl: A Coming Of Age Story

By Mark Ellis

This book is a form of retro autobiography in the fantasy genre. In it, the reader follows the journey of Marianne, who goes through all kinds of experiences, through which she must push through in order to achieve her success. The story takes place in the 1960s in a suburban Southern California town. Eyes of a Valley Girl is the type of book that you don't want to put down because you feel personally involved in the characters and what's happening in the story.

As our storyteller sees, good can overcome evil, and the story tells of how she and other people overcome various forms of evil. This book is a celebration of the growing optimism and compassion that was prevalent at the time. By going on this journey, the main character will convey the cosmic way that she views the universe and mankind.

The woman who wrote this novel, MW Lilly, is a Hollywood native but moved with her family to the Valley back in 1958. In Van Nuys, she attended Birmingham High School. She currently resides in South Kona, which is on the Island of Hawaii.

No battle can be won or journey made without a struggle, and this is also true with this story. People rave that the book is entertaining, while at the same time not ignoring the bittersweet realities of this time period. The lens that the story is told through, this person and this time, makes for a highly unique experience.

If you've ever read a book like this where the author hasn't found their voice and are maybe trying too hard to make it seem authentic, it can be painful to read. It's necessary for the writer to have the right prose in order to send the reader on this journey. Reader's are amazed by the beautiful descriptions, the humor, the angst, and the vivid details provided in this novel by MW Lilly.

There are many cultural and historical goodies just seasoned within this piece of literature. Lilly takes the time to describe the significance and details about Ganesha, for instance. She also goes into French culture, cooking, and La Belle Epoque. People who are passionate about learning often glean as much knowledge as they can from the books they read, and this type of reader will certainly not be disappointed here.

Being optimistic and compassionate are recurring underlying themes in this story that help the protagonist get through the troubles she's experiencing. Living with a parent who is an alcoholic and abusive is a painful thing to live with, and something that is portrayed from a very personal angle in this story. We are shown how she gets through these struggles, and it's an encouraging story in a way that only autobiographical pieces of work can be.

Promise and courage can be very powerful concepts for those who are going through tough or confusing times, such as moving on into adulthood. When one is coming of age, one needs the reassurance of what life's going to be, or just that they are going to be okay and are going to be able to figure things out, because it can be so overwhelming. This coming of age story is a great pick for anyone, and it comes highly recommended.
