Notable Events In Fredericksburg, Texas

By Pammy McGrath

If you are searching for a place to live in Texas, the town of Fredericksburg is an excellent choice. While it's an easy drive to the large cities of Austin and San Antonio, Fredericksburg is a peaceful, small town with a rich history surrounded by the beautiful scenery of Texas Hill Country. Despite its small size, Fredericksburg and the nearby small communities offer plenty of seasonal events, including the following.

Fredericksburg has been a city since 1846, and its downtown historic district is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In the center of downtown, you will find the quaint market square, which is known as the Markplatz, a reminder of the town's German heritage. An excellent farmer's market is set up here on Thursdays from May to August. Among the stalls, you will find locally grown lavender, produce from local farms and ranches, as well as offerings from the local wineries and restaurants.

Within the downtown area, there are nearly one dozen art galleries, which team up together to host the First Friday Art Walks. You can enjoy browsing through the galleries, and many of the galleries provide samples of wines grown at nearby wineries. The galleries are all within easy walking distance of each other and many are clustered on Main Street.

German culture is celebrated often in Fredericksburg and, of course, there is an annual Oktoberfest. In addition to being able to sample an abundance of delectable beers, one can enjoy the live music, take the kids to the children's fun area or shop for arts and crafts. There are also plenty of delicious German foods to enjoy. The highlight of the event is the annual chicken dance. Hundreds of participants line Main Street and engage in this popular yearly dance event.

If you are a family with young children, there are plenty of seasonal and holiday events for the kids. Children can enjoy an Easter egg hunt at the Pioneer Museum, a Fourth of July Parade and fireworks or the annual Christmas tree lighting in December. The latter is a German-themed holiday celebration that includes caroling, a German brass band and the lighting of a beautiful 26-foot-high German Christmas Pyramid.

Relocating to this area is simple with the help of the experts at Nixon Real Estate.
