Spend Your Holiday on the Slopes

By Catherine McCulloch

When it comes to holidays this year, think outside the box. Escape the crowds of the beach and the sand in you sandwiches and instead go to a higher plain and go to one of Europe's hilly resorts. One of the obvious benefits of staying in a steep seaside town is the increased chance of finding a room with a view.

From mountain biking and hill walking to paragliding to name a few, we've compiled a list of some of the best activities to try on your hilly holidays, which should appeal to everyone depending on what type of break your opting for from a romantic retreat to a family holiday.

The Sierra Nevada Mountains that stretch across much of Andalucia in southern Spain make it particularly scenic. The peaks give way to verdant hills tumbling down to the sea, specked with tiny traditional white villages clinging to the side of valleys or nestling in low coastal enclaves. A climb through the stone streets of the region's towns is invariably rewarded with spectacular views, making it ideal for fans of long walks and dramatic panoramas.

Oludeniz in southern Turkey is also well worth a trip, which boasts a hilly resort. A more adventurous option is to climb up into the mountains in a 4x4 and soar into the breeze from the top of Mount Babadag on a tandem paraglide. Several operators in the resort offer paragliding trips with an expert instructor and some offer quad-biking expeditions too. Breaks to the stunning seaside town are available on Mytravel.com.

Quad-biking is another fun way to enjoy a hilly resort. Added to the thrill of driving these powerful little machines is the benefit of climbing to brilliant vantage points without relying on your legs to do the work.
