Very few pleasures in life compete with the indulgent and ever cheap Caribbean holidays. The classic Jamaica draw card of palm-lined beaches and a wide range of water sports are very much in evidence on this large island, but Jamaica is also spectacularly beautiful.
The weather is always pleasant all year around and perhaps the only thing you should consider is the hurricane season. However direct hits on Jamaica by major storms are so rare, in fact, that many elder Jamaican inhabitants still relate events in history to being before or after "the storm" because they may have only seen one or two of significance in their lifetimes.
People obviously have different needs and different styles. What constitutes a great beach for one person may not be all that enjoyable for another. What makes Jamaica a great travel destination is that, as an island nation, there are a variety of beaches to choose from. Knowing what you want and where to find it will help you to make the very most of that precious vacation time.
Low mountains and the sparkling clear aqua sea make the bustling Doctor's Cave Beach the nicest place to relax in the sand with a cold drink or check out open-air restaurants, stores and water sports. The water is calmer at Walter Fletcher Beach, where there are water sports ranging from water trampolines to jet-skis.
The tempting aroma of steamed fish tickles the senses as you drive along Washington Boulevard. Follow your nose across the road from the Michi Supercentre on the busy highway and you'll find Dennis Dillon, better known in the vicinity as Pawdie, who operates his fish business under a canopy by the Bronstorph Square Plaza.
Most crime against tourists, if there is any at all, is petty and opportunistic. As in any other country you are visiting, including your own, take sensible precautions. Try to avoid walking at night alone, stay in well lighted areas, take the customary precautions with your valuables, use your room safe, and don't walk around with wads of cash in your pocket or purse.
