The Painted Pony Carousel Was The First Attraction At Pier Park

By Wesley Mathews

If you have not visited Panama City Beach recently then you have something new to look forward to during your getaway here. The Butterfly Pavilion is the latest addition to the beautiful Pier Park and it is deservedly drawing attention from numerous visitors and locals alike. No matter who you are, this new addition is guaranteed to have you entranced with the countless butterflies flitting about filling the whole area with a myriad of colors.

The Butterfly Pavilion

Based on a News Herald report, families with children are especially enjoying the show of colors put on by these insects at Pier Park. There are reportedly 400 butterflies here and all of them are native to Florida. Since there are no exotic varieties, all of these insects are permitted to mate freely. There may soon be as many as 600 of these stunning butterflies delighting tourists to the park. Among these you will see monarchs, buckeyes, zebra longwings, Julias, painted ladies, great Southern whites and numerous others. The pavilion features a careful variety of plants that are delectable to these insects to make sure they have plenty to feed on here. In addition to passion vines and milk vines, you'll also find colorful flowers adding to the spectacular display here.

About the Pier Park

Working behind the scenes to bring the Park's diverse attractions to the public are the Meeks couple- Teddy and Jenny. The very first attraction here was the painted pony carousel that once operated on the old Miracle Strip on Front Beach. When the Meeks' saw how much the people adored it, they decided to expand with more rides and attractions. The latest addition, the butterfly pavilion, was added here after careful research by Teddy Meeks, who concluded that there was nothing that is comparable to this in all of Northwest Florida. He drew inspiration from the large butterfly habitat at Callaway Gardens, Ga. The pavilion at Pier Park is a much smaller version of the Callaway gardens display with its 2000 tropical butterflies, though. Having a reasonable entry fee of $3.50 per person and kids under 2 being admitted absolutely free with paying adults there's no reason for you to pass up this dazzling display of nature's finest creations at Pier Park.

Walk down Memory Lane at Pier Park

A vacation to Pier Park might get very nostalgic with the numerous rides that Jenny and Teddy Meeks have reconditioned to running condition from the old Miracle Strip. The Carousel, the Balloon racer and the Red Baron plane are just three of the 'old timers' that are tremendously popular today with the crowds of people. There have been some new additions to the rides that happen to be just as exciting too. There is enough here to occupy you and your family for the whole day so acquiring an All day pass is not a bad idea at all!
