Charleston SC Hotels For Pleasure & Business

By Chris Matthews

Making an informed choice regarding Charleston SC hotels needs a little geography lesson about the city. That's mostly because of the peculiar layout of the city's historic downtown. The downtown area is actually a peninsula created by the meeting of the Ashley and Cooper rivers which then pour into the Atlantic.

This rather unique layout provides travelers with a choice of three broad locations for finding a hotel. Other than the downtown peninsula, the two other choices are Greater and North Charleston. The choice has to be made on a case to case basis, because each traveler will no doubt have different reasons for visiting, a different budget and different ways of going around the city.

Even so, there are a few simple things that can make the choice easier. Travelers should be aware that the historic attractions on the downtown peninsula, including the Citadel and French Quarter, are closely bunched together and can easily be seen on foot. A ferry takes people from Liberty Square to Fort Sumter, and for those who want to see the Holy City's Churches, there are many tour buses waiting.

The whole point is that it isn't necessary (or cheap) to stay in the historic downtown hotels. A stay in the Greater Charleston area would mean many river crossings, so the best bet is a hotel in North Charleston. They're cheaper and a lot more convenient for leisure as well as business, since the airport, convention center, Coliseum and Downtown area are all quite close.

There's also the question of what kind of facilities and services Charleston SC hotels provide for their guests. In keeping with the spirit of genuine Southern hospitality, a hotel here is a home away from home. This means a nice and free hot breakfast, a newspaper delivered to the door every morning, complimentary wi-fi internet and free local calls.

Steaming hot coffee will be available at all times in the lobby, and the laundry can be taken care of by valet dry-cleaning. Tired guests coming back after a day of exploring the city can relax and enjoy the outdoor pool. Those who want to burn off excess energy can make use of the onsite fitness center.

Business travelers staying in a North Charleston hotel can expect a full service business center and free shuttles for airport and convention center transfers. In-room facilities and amenities will include a work desk with ergonomic chair, and room service from the onsite restaurant. Most of the hotels near the airport also offer park & fly packages to make it easier.
