Backcountry And Outdoor Safety Is A Very Serious Matter

By Dorothy Baker

Hiking can be a lot of fun, filled with plenty of adventures that are bound to make the person who is experiencing it, form memories that cannot be compared to anything else in this world. From seeing beautiful sights that can take ones breath away to learning how to depend on the world around, one has to make sure that they prepare well for an expedition like this. Backcountry and outdoor safety is no joke and should be taken very seriously.

Being prepared for anything that happens is key to making this trip worthwhile as in the wild anything can happen and in most cases it's all about what you do when it happens that can be the difference between life and death. Traveling with a partner or in groups is preferred not only to share in the sites and wonders but also to be assistance should one encounter danger, the partner can help or call for help. This is an experience that should be on everyone's bucket list but it could be something that can cause death.

The wild is filled with plenty of dangerous animals that can cause an explorer a lot of danger. Cougars and other large animals as well as cats are always lurking around for prey and therefore one must always be aware of this. Always ensure that one stays on either marked trails or if they are unable t they take a trained guide with them as to be even better prepared for emergencies as well as the unknown.

There are a few tips when entering bear country that include making loads of noise if you are approaching a blind corner. Pack out one's garbage in fully sealed packets, and more importantly ensure that food is cooked at least 100m away from sleeping areas. Always remain alert and ensure that every person n the group is present at all times. Ensure that a flashlight is used at night around the camp site in order to see exactly where one is going.

Should the choice be made to go hunting all risks and possible dangers should be taken into account and no matter how experienced the traveler is there must be preparation done. Never chase a bear away from a kill sight if one is found rather leave it and report it as soon as possible to the conservation officer. Once a kill is made, remove the animal within one hour or day and again make sure that the camp site is at least 100m away from the harvested animal.

Water is another possible threat to travelers of any kind. Water takes a lot longer to reach a warm temperature and also reaches very cold temperatures a lot quicker so therefore it will be very cold around huge water masses. When a traveler and their party is crossing a stream, strong current or not use the best gear available as it can be very dangerous and slippery. Remember that not all water is clean, as well as home too many unfriendly creepers.

Weather is not something one can rely on. It's always better to plan, use weather predictions for this. Little should be left to chance.

In conclusion no person should ever travel into the wilderness without preparation. This will leave little to no room for error. Backcountry and outdoors safety is very import no matter which area is chosen.
